Hyphen

Hyphens (-) are the shortest length grammatical line character and are always used to join word elements to form compound words. There are 8 cases in which a hyphen is used[1]:

  1. Join 2 adjectives describing a noun
  2. Join 3+ words to form complex compound words
  3. Formally write out the last two place values in a number
  4. Disambiguate a prefix from a word or split words with the same letter next to each other
  5. Use of the prefix ex-, self-, and all-
  6. Use of the suffix -elect
  7. Attach any prefix to a capitalized word
  8. Attach a single letter to a word or a word to a number
